On
Saturday May 18th, 1996, 10 cars took the first
ever green flag for the Southern Ontario Sprints. Jerry
Whitney took the feature win at the South Buxton
Speedway in Chatam, ON. Whitney held off the
charges of fellow Sprints On Dirt regular John
Naida and Jon Banas. Whitney took round 2 at
Ohsweken Speedway fighting off the challenges of
Banas and Steve Irwin. Irwin would make good in
round 3 at Buxton. Whitney triumphed in round 4
while Naida took the series' 5th race. Mark
Broughman took the season finale but it was Jon
Banas on the strength of top 10 finishes in all 6
rounds who would take the first ever Southern
Ontario Sprints season title. The
SOS could never have gotten off the ground had it
not been for the efforts of many of the Michigan
based drivers. The state dominated the series with
all feature winner's hailing from Michigan.
