2002 was a record-breaking year for the
club. A total of 16 regular season events
were staged at 5 different tracks. Gasport
hosted an SOS event late in the season and all
reports have indicated that this event was a big
success with ESS star, Mike Woodring taking home
the victory. The SOS also had its first
female feature winner when Erin Crocker captured
the main event at Ohsweken on September 13th,
2003. Another record was set in 2002 that
might be hard to beat. For the first time in
club's history, one driver was able to win 6
features in a single season. "The
Joyceville Jet", Rick Wilson, was a dominant
force every time out and surely would have been in
contention for the title with his 6 victories,
however Wilson was not able to make every show.
The battle for the championship was fought out
between two past champions and a rookie.
Warren Mahoney took the lead in points race early
on however by mid season he had two
challengers. Rookie Billy "Zoomer"
Krull put in some very strong performances, which
included 3 feature victories, but a blown engine
in round 11 would take him out of the championship
hunt. Keith Dempster got off to a slow start
with engine problems but never gave up. His
2 feature wins combined with many solid
performances would see him take over the points
lead after the 10th event of the season, a
position he would never relinquish. Dempster
is the first repeat champion in SOS history.
Other feature winners during the 2002 season
included Ryan Coniam, Curt Sherwood, Kyle Wilson
and Mike Woodring.
The rookie battle was not as close in 2002 due to
the steady performance of Billy Krull. Not
only did Krull capture the rookie title but he
finished a strong 3rd in points as well.
However the class of 2002 was a strong one
including Glenn Styres, Phil Armishaw, Ken Bayliss,
Phil Plant, Paul Ballantyne plus six other
drivers making their inaugural appearances with
the club.
The Canadian Sprint Car Championship was again a
real thriller. A total of 28 sprinters were
on hand which included a number of front-runners
from the ESS and SOD clubs. Mike Woodring
came out on top winning the championship event for
the third consecutive year.
