Speedway August 14th, 2004
Glenn
Styres of Ohsweken has been feeling the pressure lately
as the young Cody Geldart from Mossley has been steadily
closing the gap for the points lead.
Going into the eleventh round at Brighton
Speedway, Styres had a slim, five-point lead and had not
had a top five finish in three races.
He put an end to this by winning both his heat
race and the feature Saturday night at Brighton
Speedway, in front of the enthusiastic, standing-room
only crowd.
Styres
crew chief Kevin Loveys said, Were back on track.
We found we had cracked pistons and have now
corrected the problem.
We would run fine in the heat races but part way
through the features we would begin to lose power and
couldnt figure out why. Now we know!
The
feature began with Daryl Turford of Stratford
on the pole and Dick Mahoney from Newmarket on the
outside of the front row.
Turford jumped into the early lead and stayed
there for the first three circuits.
Styres took over the point position on lap four
coming from his third starting spot and would remain
there for the balance of the race.
Geldart
started the feature along side Styres in the second row
and on lap six, he made his move around Turford to take
over second. Styres
however, had opened up a gap that he maintained until
lap fourteen. A
red flag came out on lap fourteen as Jack Pillon from
Belle River spun in turn one and laid his sprinter over
on its side.
The
race was slowed a second time on lap fifteen when a
tire, marking the inside of the track was struck and
moved into the racing line.
This gave Geldart one last chance to make a run
at the top position.
On the restart, Geldart took the outside line and
moved along-side Styres.
The two ran side-by-side for the entire lap,
bring everyone to their feet.
Styres would prevail to take home his second
feature win of the season with Geldart taking second and
Adam West from Ridgetown finishing in the third
position. Rounding
out the top five were Kyle Patrick from Tilbury and Dick
Mahoney of Newmarket.
The top-finishing rookie on the night was Willy
Northcott from London with an eight-place finish.
Heat
race winners on the night were Styres and West with
Geldart winning the Dash for Cash.
