Patrick Sweeps SOS Race at Humberstone

Bill Oldroyd
Humberstone Speedway – May 22, 2005
Humberstone Speedway was taken by storm on Sunday night when the “Tilbury Tornado”, Kyle Patrick made his first appearance of the season with the Southern Ontario Sprints and swept the night’s activities by winning his Heat race, the Dash for Cash and the Feature. Patrick, who was the SOS Rookie of the Year in 2003, plans to run mostly with the Michigan-based SOD group this season but will run a limited schedule with the SOS.
During a Victory Lane interview Patrick said; “This was a fantastic night! I love running with the SOS and racing at Humberstone Speedway. The fans here are great and it’s nice to see such a large crowd!”
Bob Crawford of Sutton paced the 22-car field to the green and quickly jumped into the lead. The Eldarodo Logistics machine of Jack Pillon from Belle River, started in the 5th position and by lap 2 had taken over the runner-up spot with his sights set on the leader.
However, the drivers on the move were Mark Schulz of Newfane, NY and Patrick. In just 3 laps the pair had climbed 7 positions to sit 3rd and 4th respectively. On lap 5 Patrick got past Schulz to take the 3rd position and 2 laps later he set claim on 2nd when he passed
Pillon. Patrick made his final pass of the night on lap 8 when he drove under Crawford coming out of turn 2 to take the lead.
At the mid-point of the race, Patrick led, followed by Crawford, Schulz, Pillon and Adam West of Ridgetown rounding out the top 5. Jamie Collard of Princeton was in 6th coming off his first-ever SOS victory earlier in the night when he won his Heat race. Dave Schulz from Barker, NY had climbed to 7th.
Ohsweken’s Glenn Styres had to start the Feature deep in the field as a result of a fire during his Heat race caused by a fuel leak. By lap 11 he had battled his way into the 8th position. Jim Porter of Grand Island, NY and Burlington’s Craig Downie rounded out the top 10.
The only caution of the night flew on lap 19 when Stephanie Christiano from Tonawanda, NY had a spin in turn 2 and came to a stop. Patrick would go on to take the victory followed by M. Schulz, West, Collard and Crawford. West, with another solid performance, takes over the SOS points lead.
Heat race winners were West, Collard and Patrick. The Fan-Dash for Cash was captured by Patrick with race fan Becca
Surridge, sharing the honors.

Next up the 10th Anniversary tour will see the SOS take on the high-speed Ohsweken Speedway oval for the second time this season. The race is scheduled for May 27th and it is expected that a couple of new faces will make there depute with the series at this event.
