STYRES STILL PERFECT AT HIS HOME TRACK

Ohsweken Speedway – June 10, 2005

The Southern Ontario Sprints visited Ohsweken Speedway for the third time this season and once again, past SOS Champion and track owner Glenn Styres, came home victorious. Styres has been perfect this season at Ohsweken winning all three SOS events.

The fifth stop on the SOS 10th anniversary tour will go in the record books as one of the best races of the season up to his point. A strong field of 24 sprinters took the green and the race would run the entire 21 laps without a caution. In fact, there were no cautions all night as the Heat races and Dash for Cash also went off without a hitch.

When the green dropped for the Feature event of the night, Warren Mahoney of Lefroy took the early lead. Styres and Brad Knab from Delevan, NY both went very high in turn one causing them to loose several positions. Styres dropped back to 13th place from his 8th place starting position while Knab dropped from 10th to 16th.

Lap two would see the lead change again when Curt Sherwood from Sanborn, NY made the pass for the top spot. Another lead change took place on lap three when “Gentlemen” John Riegling of Chatham took over the lead, a position he held until late in the race.

Jim Porter from Grand Island, NY started the Feature in 7th place and by lap six had made his way up to the 2nd position. Sprint car rookie “Fast” Freddie Cade, from Niagara Falls, ON was in 3rd with current SOS points leader Adam West from Ridgetown now up to 4th from his 11th place starting position. Sherwood was still running strong in 5th.

At the mid-point of the race, Riegling was still in command with Cade in 2nd. Styres had battled back from his first lap problems and was now up to 3rd position with West in 4th and Dick Mahoney of Newmarket running a very strong 5th. Rounding out the top ten at the half way point were Porter, Knab, Mark Schulz of Newfane, NY, Sherwood and Cayuga Speedway owner Garry Evans making his first appearance of the season.

Styres would inherit the lead with only a handful of laps remaining when Riegling was forced to pull off the track. Riegling was using a new Hans device and was experiencing sever neck pain forcing him to retire for the race. At the checkered it was Styres taking his third victory of the season, all coming at the “Big O”. West would make a last lap pass to take the 2nd position with Cade finishing in 3rd. Mahoney finished a very strong 4th with Schulz rounding out the top five.

A last lap spin by Jim Sweers took out Knab as well dropping him out of the top five.

Heat race winners were Styres, Riegling and Dick Mahoney. Knab captured the Fan-Dash for Cash with fan Janet Manns, sharing the honors.
