RICK WILSON TOPS SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS AT HUMBERSTONE

For Immediate Release - Ken Pelkie, Southern Ontario Sprints Public Relations

The “Joyceville Jet” scored an impressive victory Sunday night at Pete Cosco’s Humberstone Speedway over Kyle Patrick and Craig Downie.

After loosing the second round of the series 2006 tour to wet conditions at Ohsweken Speedway Friday night, a field of thirty eight sprints checked into the pits to do combat. Under cold and dry conditions, the qualifying heats and “B” Main were completed elevating SOS regulars Daryl Turford and Craig Downie to the front row for the feature event.

Turford and Downie paced the field to the green with Downie leading out of turn two as Turford settled in second. The two set a torrid pace until lap three when Turford lost the handle in turn three bringing out the caution.

As Turford rejoined the rear of the field, Warren Mahoney now occupied second with Rick Wilson already in third from his twelfth place starting position. Adam West and John Riegling rounded out the top five.

Kyle Patrick moved around Riegling and West to claim fourth on lap four as caution came out for the second time with Jim Davies looping his ride in turn two.

The green waved again on lap five as Downie once again opened up a commanding lead with Mahoney, Wilson and Patrick in pursuit.

At the half way point, Downie was still on the point when the caution waved as Joe Middlemiss came to a stop at the exit of turn four with steering problems. Curt Sherwood also spun off turn three as the caution waved and both retired to the pits for the night.

The restart found Mahoney lining up behind Downie with Wilson in third. Patrick, West. Riegling, Bob Crawford, Glenn Styres, Mike Lauterborn and Tim Phillips rounded out the top ten.

As the green flag appeared, Lauterborn dropped out of the race and retired from the event as Downie continued to set the pace. Lapped traffic began to play a role on lap fourteen as Downie and Mahoney were overtaken by Wilson entering turn three. Patrick overtook Mahoney for third on lap fifteen and closed in on Downie as Wilson began to open up a comfortable lead. Patrick completed the pass on Downie for second on lap eighteen as Mahoney and West gave chase.

Wilson cruised to the win with Patrick a solid second. Craig Downie held on for third in his first outing of the season with Mahoney and West completing the top five. Styres, Phillips, Riegling, Crawford, and Tom Huppunen completed sixth through tenth.

Heat races were won by Daryl Turford, Warren Mahoney, Kyle Patrick and Adam West, while Fred Pigeon claimed the “B” Main.

Next up will be a weekend double as Ohsweken Speedway hosts the S.O.S. June 9th with a return to Brighton Speedway slated the following night, June 10th.
