A standing room only crowd greeted the return of the Southern Ontario Sprints to Brighton Speedway Saturday night with the hometown favourite collecting his third series victory of the year. Rick Wilson, “The Joyceville Jet” reeled in leader Glenn Styres at the half way point and handily controlled the rest of the distance to take the win.

Pole sitter Daryl Turford grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and led the first lap before relinquishing the top spot to Styres. Styres continued to command the field while Wilson was working his way through the pack. Rookie contenders Joe Middlemiss and Kevin Job continue to consistently run in the front as Job collected his second third place finish in as many nights while Middlemiss finished fifth. Point leader Warren Mahoney came in fourth at the stripe. Sixth through tenth were Bob Crawford, Ken Swan, Jim Price, Craig Downie, and Rob Middlemiss.

Several cautions slowed the pace with the most serious incident coming when Dick Mahoney, Craig Downie and April Wilson tangled in turn four eliminating the Wilson youngster from the event. 

Earlier in the evening during heat race action, long time SOS official Ron Sparks was struck by a vehicle while directing cars to “run through” an area on the track that had been wetted down by some standing water at the edge of the racing surface. Track crew immediately attended to Ron who was transported to Trenton hospital where he was treated for multiple contusions and later released.

Heat races were won by Glenn Styres and Craig Downie while Rick Wilson claimed the “Dash”.

Next up on August 20th the series will return to Humberstone Speedway Sunday night. Racing activities are set to go at 6:30 PM with Pit gates opening at 4:30 PM.
