Ken SWAN TOPS SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINT ACTION AT HUMBERSTONE

For Immediate Release – Ken Pelkie, SOS Public Relations

The Southern Ontario Sprint tour produced yet another first time winner in 2006 when the series made a stop at Humberstone Speedway Sunday night. Having a relatively successful season on the tour, Ken Swan of Lockport, New York reached the winner circle for the first time as he held off a determined Jim Price to claim victory.

Jim Price and Swan made up the front row as the twenty lap feature event readied to get underway. Price won the race to turn one and emerged with the lead as the pair exited turn two. Swan pressured Price for the top spot and inched by for the lead as the duo completed lap four. Tim Phillips, Craig Downie, and Tom Huppunen completed the top five as the caution waved for the first time as Daryl Turford lost the handle in turn one and came to rest.

With the field reformed for the restart, Kevin Job headed pit side with brake problems when the green waved again. With Swan firmly in control, attention turned farther back in the field as Glenn Styres, Jamie Collard, and John Riegling were making a march toward the front. The red flag appeared on lap nine as Collard and Styres made contact in turn three resulting in Styres turning the new Eagle chassis over and putting him out of the event.

Up front, Price had slipped to fourth as Craig Downie and Huppunen made a bid for the point with Riegling now fifth when the green flag once again waved. Swan controlled the restart and resumed command as the field rocketed to the half way point in the race.

Stan Zanchin brought out the yellow flag on lap ten when his machine came to rest in turn four. When racing resumed, the heat turned up in the battle for second through fifth as Downie, Huppunen, Price and Riegling had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The yellow again slowed the race on lap twelve when Jeff Daniels came to rest in turn three and again on lap sixteen for Daniels in turn four.

The final restart was paced again by Swan with Price, Huppunen, Downie, and Riegling in tow. Price made a couple of charges for the lead but at the finish it was Swan holding on to pick up his first SOS win with Price coming home out of fuel in second place. Huppunen, Downie, and Riegling completed the top five.

Heat races were won by Craig DOWNIE, Tom HUPPUNEN, Ken SWAN and Glenn STYRES while Joe MIDDLEMISS claimed the “B”.

Next up the series will return to South Buxton Raceway Saturday night, August 26th for the final time in 2006. Racing activities are set to go at 7:00 PM. Then it will be off to Brighton Speedway Labour Day weekend for the annual Classic; Saturday, Sunday affair that has grown into one of the premier events on the Southern Ontario Sprint calendar.
