For Immediate Release - Bill Oldroyd
The Southern Ontario Sprints kicked off the Labour Day Classic Weekend at Brighton Speedway on September 1st in wild fashion. SOS veteran Dick Mahoney won his heat race, finished second to his son Warren in the Dash for Cash and them went on to lead ever lap in the main event capturing his first feature win of the season.
Mahoney started on the front row and jumped into the lead followed by James Whittaker, and Jeff Daniels. A first lap accident in turn four involving 4 cars forced a complete restart of the race.
On lap three the red flag came out when rookie Justin Martin took a wild end-over-end ride down the front stretch. Fortunately Martin was not injured however his sprinter suffered major damage side-lining him for the weekend.
Mahoney, Whittaker and Daniels continued to hold down the top three positions with Bob Crawford in fourth. Kyle Patrick, John Watson and another local favourite Chris Jones, were all on the move towards the front when Jones flipped in turn four bring out the second red flag of the night on lap six. Jones was not injured however he was not able to continue due to the damage to his sprinter.
At the half way mark, it was Mahoney still in the lead followed by Daniels, Patrick, Crawford and Keith Dempster who had started in the fourteenth position. Another driver on the move was Kyle Wilson who had worked his way up to the sixth position after starting at the tail of the field. Patrick would see his march to the front come to an end on lap twelve when he spun in turn two dropping him out of contention.
The race would be halted again on lap nineteen when Whittaker flipped in turn four. On the restart Crawford was able to take over second spot from Daniels with Kyle Wilson now in fourth. Adam West also had a fine race coming from deep in the field to finish the race in fifth.
In victory lane, a jubilant Mahoney thanked the crowed and Brighton Speedway for their support of the SOS. “I’m so excited to get this win” he said.
Heat races were won by Jamie WHITTAKER, Dick MAHONEY and Derek Jonathon. The win by WHITTAKER was his first ever win in a sprint car. The DASH for CASH was won by Warren MAHONEY.
Next up the series will complete the LABOUR DAY CLASSIC double header weekend at Brighton and then move back to Ohsweken Speedway Friday, Sept. 7th to close out the season.
