NOTE REGARDING RADIOS

Note to SOS Teams Regarding Radios:

As was discussed at our Fall meeting – We will be purchasing an additional officials radio to work with Raceceivers. Our radios will be set up so that they still work with both the current scanners that many competitors have already purchased and use as well as with the Raceceivers. It is recommended that if you have not yet purchased your in car radio to go with the Raceciver as that is the direction the rest of the sprint car world is taking including the local ESS and Patriot groups. From all reports they work MUCH better than the scanners.

You may purchase a Raceceiver from either Grisdales, Bicknell Racing, Humberstone Speedway and I believe the ESS sells them as well. There are apparently 2 different types of Raceceivers – I believe one is a red unit(fan unit) and one is yellow (driver’s unit). The red version is considered a fan unit because it has a more cumbersome ear piece (does not have to fit inside a helmet etc. and I believe it does not provide the same level of sound quality because it does not have to over come engine noise etc – I believe it uses an amplifier similar to what is used in hearing aids. So be careful when purchasing and ask the proper questions.

I’m told the only Achilles heal with Raceceivers is that they do not have a simple on/off switch and if you are not careful they will go through batteries quickly. The good news is they use AAA alkaline batteries – ie. Nothing you can’t find at any variety store.

For more information on Raceceivers - they do have a website http://www.raceceiver.com/productlist.aspx

As the rules state one-way radios are mandatory – In the past we have taken a “soft line” on this because of the problems encountered with the scanners – this will not be the case in ’06. Make sure you have a properly functioning Scanner or Raceceiver. The SOS Board will be looking at possibly having a couple of Raceceivers on hand for sale or rent but don't rely on this.
