Sprint
car fans can now circle Saturday July 24th, 2004 on
their calendars, as the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS)
will make its return to the South Buxton Raceway's 3/8
mile clay oval for the first time in 5 years. Both The
Southern Ontario Sprints and the South Buxton Raceway
are pleased to announce that an agreement has been
reached to add the South Buxton Raceway to the 2004
series schedule.
A new
ownership and management team has taken over operations
of the Chatham area track. New Track Owner, Scott
Mihalco and new Track Promotor, Ron Urquhart have
already announced many improvements to the South Buxton
Raceway for 2004 including new protective fencing as
well as many other facility upgrades and race night
improvements.
"The
SOS is looking forward to returning to South Buxton and
its awesome fans and we are looking forward to working
with the new ownership team." said SOS President
Peter Turford. "This will provide an
opportunity for the Chatham area racers who have
supported us so well in the past to compete at their
home track." "I know that Jeff
Gotelaer and Dick Mahoney from the SOS worked long and
hard to put this deal together" Turford added.
Gotelaer, the new track PR and Sales Rep, is responsible
for preparing the 2004 schedule for South Buxton and was
instrumental in making this agreement become reality.
This
announcement is a win-win situation for South Buxton
race fans. Not only will they see vast improvements to
their speedway but they will also get a chance to see
local drivers Adam West of Ridgetown, Kyle Patrick of
Tillbury along with Jason Haskell compete with the rest
of the SOS stars on the South Buxton clay. It is
certainly hoped that former regulars John Riegling and
Dean St. Denis (Chatham/Windsor) will return to compete
for this SOS event. Both of these veterans towed
many hours up and down the 401 for many years supporting
the SOS. There is also a large London area
contingent expected.
South
Buxton was the facility where the SOS held its premier
event on May 18th, 1996. Eleven cars took the green flag
in the first SOS feature with Jerry Whitney holding off
John Naida after a torrid duel for the win. The SOS has
since grown to become Canada's premier sprint car
series. The Southern Ontario Sprints
returning to the track where it all began means big
things for both the South Buxton Raceway and the SOS.
However, the biggest winners of all will be the fans of
sprint car racing in Southern Ontario. The new
team in place at South Buxton is already proving that
they mean business without having even waved the green
flag on their first race of the year. The Southern
Ontario Sprints and its many teams are proud and excited
to begin this new era and look forward to putting on the
best show possible for the fans!
