Q&A with: Mark Christiano

Would you say that your 2003 campaign was a successful one compared to the goals that you had set going into the season?
03 was not the most enjoyable thing that I have experienced. IT STUNK.  We started the year on a BRAND new motor that had taken me a little over a year to gather the right parts and get it together. THEN-38 laps later-almost a lifetime to a mosquito-POP! Lost it at Brighton on opening night. I wasn't there to witness it, but after Curt got sick he called and told me of the misery. The second motor that was freshened in the off season got the nod in Curt's car, lasted a while, then at Brighton again, on Labor Day weekend, lost oil pressure and was parked. The next week, fresh from the builder again, came apart big time the first lap of the heat. END OF SEASON!
The neatest thing that went on was having my daughter Stephanie race a few times at the end of the season-- no pressure-(no performance pressure)- It was a lot of fun!
Going into the 2004 season what plans do you have for yourself and your team?

For 04 we are planning on her running the whole schedule, and me running a part time season, when I feel that I dont have to be watching and worrying most of the time.(never). Also we hope to keep up with the weekly go kart racing at Ransmville. I put together a kart for myself this winter also, and hope to run the "OLD, FAT GUY CLASS".

Other then working in the shop, what did you do to keep busy during the offseason?

This off season I got all my "honey-do" projects out of the way early.-new kitchen floor, re-do bathroom, and got a sunroom project completed. Now for summer so I can relax!

What did you do over the holiday season?
We went to my uncle and aunt's house for the annual Christmas dinner where there are too many people at the table, no room to move, and kids that are too loud!
BUT, you know what, and everybody think about this one---- enjoy all of the holiday's inconveniences and "bothers" because some day you will miss having someone to bump your elbow into or spill wine on your pants.--------just my thought-----New Years was not real great, because we lost Curt and Dave's dad a few days before New Years. I knew Dad before I even had a thought about who Curt was. I had known Dave previously from the neighborhood. They live a couple of streets down from me.... These guys have extended my "friend base " farther than ever! Cousins, uncles, ex-uncles, new uncles, step aunts, It goes a LONG way--- its Neat!
What goals have you and your teams set for the 2004 SOS Series Tour?

I have really gone off the deep end on this! I would love to have another Rookie award on the wall next to the one Curt got us a couple years back. This is the first time in a few years that I really feel that I have the ducks in a row to get on with the season without a major surprise in the spring! The other thing that would be neat would be to see if we can get Curt a good run at the championship! With all four cars at our disposal, hopefully we might get something! (I'm not holding my breath!)

What was involved in getting your cars ready for 2004?

Both my car and Steph's needed nothing but new motors, so my motor is ready, and hers is on its way soon.

Did you have any prior experience in a race car before sitting behind the wheel of a sprint car?

No sponsors as of yet, but I've done it mostly on my own nickel all of my racing life, so there is no sense changing a good thing. Yeah, right!
