Q&A With: "The President"

Looking back on the season of 2003 what areas does the club look to improve on for 2004?
Well you've already taken care of a website improvement!!!
Here's what we would like:
-We always want more teams
-We always want to put on a smooth fast show
-We always want more media exposure and sponsorship
In your opinion what where a few of the most memorable moments for the SOS in 2003?
The 2003 Canadian Sprint Car Championship was the best race I have EVER seen ANYWHERE!  Also the Mike Lauterborn and Rick Wilsons battle at Ohsweken.  Seeing the awesome yearbook Bill Oldroyd put together
And of course the Brighton Labour Day doubleheader to me was a lot of fun and great race weekend.  I'm really looking forward to this event in 2004.
Being President of a growing club like the SOS you must see a lot of positives as well as growing pains. Has your tenure been positive or has it been a rough journey?
In all honesty it has been a rough journey but it seems to be getting smoother.  Most of the reason for the rough journey is the pressure I put on myself.  I expect perfect races (no yellows, great battles, free of
controversy). I expect full fields, grateful teams and promoters and sponsors jumping all over themselves to be part of the SOS. Unfortunately the reality is often different.  One mistake I made in the past is not delegating enough.  I believe that we are making strides in this direction.  I find that people have come to rely too much on me (and I let them).  What I am trying to do is give others the freedom to succeed or fail.  The thing I'm proudest of is that we are one of the few racing series anywhere where the drivers do not have to pay for a pit pass to get in and
race.
How did you and your family celebrate the holidays this year?
I went out and swore at Daryl's race car a bit, but it was an otherwise quiet Christmas - which is what I wanted.  Daryl went North with plans of snowmobiling dancing in his head but was met with rain and green grass.
Will fans see any major changes with the SOS this season?
Yes and no. In general I'm expecting more of the same only better! A few new teams in John Watson, Willie Northcott, Gary Evans (not the Cayuga
promoter a different Gary Evans)- and most of our old nucleus returning.  One note on these 3 new guys is that they are all from the London area and all Micro-Sprint grads. We will be making some changes to speed up the show and improve driver safety which are always our goals.
What goals have the club set into place for 2004 to increase fan interest and car counts?
Right now our most exciting new plan is too work closer with the Michigan based SOD group and we will be running a 2 race mini-series with them - August 27 at Ohsweken will be one of those dates.  We also have another idea in mind but I can not share it at this time.  We will be repeating the Brighton Doubleheader weekend.  As well, we will be having our Bully Hilly
Qualifiers.  What we are trying to do is make our "regular" events more special.  We are also working with people such as the ESS and Mercer Raceway
Park.  While you may not see any immediate results down the road this could mean something.
